This Tokyo café is serving ice cream topped with natto

Should you’re eager to attempt among the uniquely Japanese ice cream flavours similar to sesame, sake and hojicha, you may need to add Café au Lait Tokyo to your checklist. This café and restaurant in Takadanobaba has launched a brand new dessert possibility: café-au-lait-flavoured ice cream topped with natto.

This base for this uncommon creation appears fairly normal as Turkish espresso is used to make the café au lait ice cream. Then it will get somewhat attention-grabbing: the ice cream is garnished with espresso beans and natto (fermented soybeans) combined in soy sauce, and completed with whipped cream, nuts and kuromitsu (Japan’s reply to molasses).

Regardless of natto’s fame for being pungent, the dessert smells moderately nice, because of the soy sauce seasoning. The ice cream pairs nicely with the bitter espresso beans and salty fermented soybeans that resemble chocolate chips.

The store’s concept to pair natto and occasional happened final 12 months, particularly on July 10, which is Natto Day. Initially, the café employees tried including scorching espresso to natto beans, making a kakigori shaved ice dessert with natto, and even a bubble tea-style iced espresso with natto rather than boba.

If all these different ideas sound intriguing to you, we’ve got some dangerous information. After all of the testing, Café au Lait opted to place solely its natto-topped ice cream on the menu, prepared for the new and humid summer time.

The natto ice cream at Café au Lait Tokyo prices ¥420 and is just obtainable till July 25.
